1656: “Las Meninas”

1656
“Las Meninas” by Diego Velázquez, Baroque, Oil on canvas, 3.18 m x 2.76 m  (Museo Nacional del Prado, Spain)

Many things are happening in this painting. In the center, the little girl is being taken care of by various women. And on the side, a painter is probably painting her parents who reflect on the mirror across the hall. Next to the mirror, a man was leaving the room. On the right side, a lady looks toward us while the dog rests tirelessly. The group portrait makes it easier to spot the focal point, the girl, because of the direction of all the gaze of the character and the bright light that shines at her in the dark room.
