1793: “Three Beauties of the Present Day”

1793
“Three Beauties of the Present Day” by Kitagawa Utamaro, Ukiyo-e, woodcut, 37.9 cm × 24.9 cm (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston)

The three beauties are not only well-known for their looks but also their popularity and family affiliation. They are Tomimoto Tehina, Naniwa Whales, and Takashima Nisa. At the center is Tomimoto Tehina. She was a geisha famous for her skills in an instrument close to lute. On the right is Naniwa Whales who is a tea house owner’s daughter. She is more popular than the third woman of the same background, Takashima Nisa, but she has become more arrogant and haughty. The printing though is the individualized and idealized of the three woman.
