1812: “The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries”

1812
“The Emperor Napoleon in His Study at the Tuileries” by Jacques-Louis David, Neoclassicism, Oil on canvas, 2.04 m x 1.25 m (National Gallery of Art West Building, D.C.)

Napoleon is at the center of the portrait. The tone of the room is dark overall, while Napoleon is the lightest, making him a focal point. He posed with his shoulder hunched a little and his hand in his vest, while he was in his uniform as a colonel of the Foot Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard. The clock and the candles shows the time Napoleon has been working. The scroll of work on his desk makes him seem like a hard working man and unlike the other nobles who are known to be lazy. He was able to differentiate himself to show people that is a great leader. And this all through the narration of painting by David.
