1840: “The Slave Ship”

1840
“The Slave Ship” by Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, Romanticism, Oil on canvas, 90.8 cm x 122.6 cm (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston)

“The Slave Ship” is a political calling of the unfair treatment slaves are getting at the time; even though, slavary has already been banned. The first color that hits the viewer is the red from the sun, which gives off the impression of anger. It is followed by the looks of the crashing waves in the ocean and the sinking ship. The details will slowly be revealed as the viewer looks closer to the foreground. It is the dark image of slaves drowning in shackles and eaten by sea creatures.
