510 BC: Euphronios Herakles wrestling Antaios

510 BC
Euphronios Herakles wrestling Antaios by Euphronios, Archaic, Pioneer, red-figure, 46 cm high x 55 cm diameter (Louvre Museum, Paris)

The pottery has the tale of Herakles wrestling with the Libyan giant Antaios. Both figures are nude, revealing the anatomy of the body. Herakles is painted in profile view, while Antaios turns sideways which provide the viewer with a muscular impression from his trunk to the sole visible foot. Behind them are three women cheering in the wrestling match. It has the Pioneer style because it represents the newly found interest in artists for the human anatomy.
