720-705 BC Royal Citadel of Sargon II in Dur Sharrukin, Iraq The Royal Citadel of Sargon II was built as a new capital. Another meaning of the name of this city is the “Fortress of Sargon”. The city covers 1.78 square kilometers, and it is surrounded with a wall 12 meters high and 14 meters thick. The plan of the city is a near perfect square with a ziggurat with four levels, building upon Sargon’s design which meant to be incomparable to any other palace. The construction of this palace has copper, lead, silver, gold, limestone, magnesite, and lapis lazuli deposited in their cornerstone and timber imported from Lebanon.
